Wireless Home Networking
Computer access at home is no longer considered complete without wireless capabilities. Integrating laptops, smartphones and gaming systems into a home network is most easily accomplished utilizing Wi-Fi. Fortunately, the low cost of wireless routers and the ease of use and install has brought this technology into many homes. Unfortunately, these same benefits are leaving many home computer networks vulnerable to unwelcome guests in a best-case scenario, and hackers in a worst-case scenario.
Wi-Fi Basics
Wi-Fi is a method of computer communication through air, usually up to 100 feet from the transmission source. That transmission source is called a Wi-Fi router or access-point. A computer or other device which has Wi-Fi capability communicates to the router with a wireless network interface card. This device can be internally or externally installed. Modern laptops have a wireless network interface card, and even some desktop computers are now coming installed with this as standard equipment.
A router is normally plugged into your internet modem, which in the Las Vegas Valley is usually supplied by CenturyLink or Cox Communications. The wireless router makes the internet connection available to multiple computers through Wi-Fi, as well as computers plugged directly into the router.
Right out of the box, a wireless router seems ready to use. Most manufacturers have the router programmed to allow all computers and devices to connect without problems. The down side of this is Wi-Fi security is turned off meaning anyone in the area can join the network without restriction. In neighborhoods, this can mean your neighbors may be using your network. The more people using your internet, the slower it goes.
It can also mean someone can access your network from their car in the area. This problem compounds itself if you live in close proximity to others such as in a condo or apartments. A Las Vegas Geek technician once reported a customer’s Wi-Fi had 23 computers connected that were not in the family’s home! Twenty-three. Can you imagine their shock?
